"The Promotion of White Dominance and the Devaluation of Black Lives in Disney’s Soul"

1st Place in Best Media Analyst Paper from the Klein College MSP Awards. This paper dives into the anti-black tropes within the film that ultimately treat the black main character, Joe, as disposable. This strips him of agency and autonomy in favor of highlighting 22’s white-identifying character at the expense of Joe’s fatal contributions. "Barbie and the Gender-coded Attempt at Feminism"

This paper examines how Barbie grew into the feminist icon she is today, while also offering a critique to how her femininity is presented. In an attempt to combat stereotypes facing women, Barbie has built their own criteria for what it means to be a woman, and those characteristics are hardly diverse. While Barbie has taken great strides at introducing feminist ideals to young girls, the franchise falls short when it comes to upholding gender codes through aesthetics, sexuality, and interests, creating a standard for femininity when feminism should have none. Click the image on the right to read an excerpt!
